Hen Asem Program Series
The Fredericksburg Area Museum (FAM) is hosting a year-long program series titled Hen Asem, to commemorate the 400th anniversary of the arrival of Africans in the English colonies at Point Comfort, VA, in 1619. Virginia’s 2019 Commemoration, American Evolution, officially began in October, and FAM’s programming supports this statewide initiative. Hen Asem will include a lineup of performances, lectures, and family programming focused on African American stories as well as Fredericksburg’s African connections. The program series will include:
African and the Bible (March 23rd) Learn about Africa’s connections to the Bible from a panel of religious leaders. Location and time will be determined by February 22nd.
Second Saturday: Taratibu Youth Association and Baba Jamal Koram (May 11th) Gather in historic Market Square from 11am – 2pm to listen to African storyteller Baba Jamal Koram, view a dance performance from the D.C. area’s Taratibu Youth Association. Immediately after the performances, join us for dance lessons, drumming activities and make and take crafts.
Juneteenth Celebration (June 15th) Come visits us at Fredericksburg’s Juneteenth celebration, an event that commemorates of the end of slavery in Texas in 1865. The event will be held at New City Fellowship, 200 Prince Edward St., from 12:00 – 7:00pm.
Evening with An Expert Lecture Series (September 19th, October 17th, November 21st) FAM is pleased to announce the return of their lecture series, Evening with An Expert. This year’s series “Evening with An Expert: Hen Asem” will explore topics like African American history and genealogy. These programs will be held at the Renwick Building (previously the Fredericksburg City Renwick Courthouse), 815 Princess Anne Street, from 7:00 – 8:30 pm.
Second Saturday: Kundum (October 12th) Join us in historic Market Square at 11am to celebrate the Ghanaian festival Kundum. This celebration will include special performances as well as family crafts, and activities!
