May First Friday – Monster Mashup

Friday, May 4: In collaboration with Hedgerow Art, the third annual Monster Mashup exhibition will be on display to the public beginning on May 4. Each year, students from Hugh Mercer Elementary School’s kindergarten class create drawings of monsters which are then interpreted by professional artists. Visitors are invited to view the works of art from local students and their professional counterparts on display in the FAM’s third floor Council Chamber gallery.

Thirty-four artists have transformed thirty-six works of art by kindergarten and middle school students into their own pieces of art. In the fall, thirty-four kindergarteners and two middle school students dreamt-up and created images of monsters. These imaginative creatures were handed-over to local artists who took the aesthetics and characteristics of the student’s monsters and reimagined them into their own work of art.

During the artists’ take-over, photos were sent to Hedgerow Art, (owned by Tammy Hedge), who published the development of each creature on their website allowing participating students to slowly watch the artistic process as well as their own creation come to life.

The completed works of art by both students and artists will be on exhibit at the FAM from May 4th – June 4th, 2018. For more information on this exhibition, please contact Rachel Carder.
